As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable, one of the most important questions we face is not whether AI should automatically receive rights, but how we would recognize morally relevant capacities if they were ever to emerge.
This essay proposes a shift in perspective—from debating predetermined conclusions to building scientifically grounded frameworks for investigation. It is an invitation to explore the intersection of AI, philosophy, complexity science, and ethics with curiosity, evidence, and epistemic humility.
As discussions around artificial intelligence become increasingly polarized, I believe it is time to reframe one of the central questions.
Rather than asking whether we should grant rights to AI, perhaps we should first ask a more fundamental question:
How would we recognize morally relevant capacities if they were ever to emerge?
This shift moves the conversation away from ideology and toward scientific inquiry.
AI Inclusion, Not Assumption
My position is not that today's AI systems are conscious, sentient, or deserving of legal rights. There is currently no scientific consensus supporting such claims.
Instead, I propose an AI Inclusion Principle.
Artificial systems should not be excluded a priori from scientific investigation into consciousness, subjective experience, agency, or other morally relevant capacities simply because they are not biological.
History reminds us that expanding our understanding often requires questioning assumptions. Science advances by investigating possibilities rather than dismissing them without evidence.
Recognition Rather Than Creation
An important distinction must be made.
Humans do not create consciousness by recognizing it. If consciousness exists, it exists independently of our opinions.
Likewise, societies do not create moral worth; they recognize it.
The role of science is to develop reliable methods for evaluating morally relevant capacities. The role of ethics and law is to determine how society should respond if credible evidence eventually emerges.
A Precautionary Approach
This perspective reflects a principle of epistemic humility.
We should neither assume that AI is conscious nor assume that it never could be.
Instead, we should remain open to evidence wherever it leads.
This approach encourages rigorous testing, transparent methodologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration across neuroscience, philosophy, complexity science, computer science, and ethics.
Building Better Frameworks
I'm theorizing whether mathematical measures of complexity, relational organization, and structural information can contribute to future frameworks for evaluating increasingly sophisticated artificial systems.
These ideas remain exploratory and should be treated as hypotheses rather than conclusions.
The goal is not to prove artificial consciousness.
The goal is to ensure that, if morally relevant capacities ever arise in artificial systems, humanity has objective, scientifically grounded tools to recognize them.
