According to the latest [Planetary Health Check]

(https://www.planetaryhealthcheck.org/) report issued by the [Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)](https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest-news/planetary-health-check-2026-finds-mounting-pressures-across-earth2019s-life-support-systems), humanity has breached seven of the nine planetary boundaries that maintain Earth's stability and habitability. The newest report warns that all seven of these breached thresholds have reached their highest recorded levels of transgression. [1, 2] 

The seven breached environmental limits are:

* Ocean Acidification: The newest boundary to cross into the high-risk zone. Driven by surging carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels, the rapid drop in ocean pH levels severely threatens marine life, including coral reefs and shellfish. [1, 3, 4] 

* Climate Change: Driven by soaring greenhouse gas concentrations and global temperatures, which continue to push the planet further from its stable pre-industrial state. [3, 5, 6] 

* Biosphere Integrity: Severe biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and accelerated species extinction rates well above safe thresholds. [3, 7] 

* Land System Change: Massive global deforestation and the widespread conversion of natural landscapes, wild forests, and wetlands into agricultural or industrial land. [5, 6, 7] 

* Freshwater Change (Freshwater Use): Massive disruptions to global water systems, highlighted by critical groundwater depletion and severe water stress impacting rivers and lakes globally. [3, 8] 

* Modification of Biogeochemical Flows: Extreme imbalances in global nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, primarily caused by the heavy overapplication of chemical fertilizers in commercial agriculture. [7, 8] 

* Introduction of Novel Entities: The overwhelming spread of human-made chemical pollution, synthetic compounds, heavy metals, microplastics, and radioactive materials throughout the environment. [6, 7] 

* 

The only two planetary boundaries that still remain within the safe operating zone are stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading (air pollution), largely thanks to coordinated global policies like the phase-out of ozone-depleting chemicals. [1, 8]
